It鈥檚 celebration time at听Bright Beginnings Children鈥檚 Centre in Taree, with the team officially awarded an听Exceeding National Quality Standard (NQS) rating听in their recent Assessment and Rating.

This achievement is a proud moment for the educators, families, and wider community, and marks a huge milestone for the centre, which was last assessed at听Meeting听in 2019. Now, Bright Beginnings joins the top-performing centres across NSW and Australia recognised for delivering education and care that goes beyond compliance, with continuous improvement and strong outcomes for children at the heart of what they do.

What 鈥淓xceeding鈥 Means

The National Quality Standard sets the benchmark for early childhood education and care in Australia. Services rated听Exceeding NQS听demonstrate practice that is:

  • Beyond the requirements听in at least four of the seven quality areas
  • Consistently embedded听in service operations
  • Shaped by a culture of continuous improvement
  • Delivering positive outcomes for children鈥檚 learning, wellbeing, and development

For families, this means confidence that their children are thriving in a safe, nurturing, and inspiring environment every day.

Spotlight on Educators and Leadership

For Centre Manager听Jan Williams, who has been part of the Bright Beginnings community for more than 20 years, the Exceeding result is the culmination of dedicated teamwork and focused improvement since the centre joined 黑料专区 in December 2024.

鈥淎fter we were acquired by Affinity, our new Quality Advisor asked about our Quality Improvement Plan - we proudly showed her 18 focus areas,鈥 laughs Jan. 鈥淗er first advice was 鈥榗hoose three!鈥欌

With renewed focus, the team worked intensively on three core areas:

  • Embedding听Child Safe Standards听across practice
  • Enhancing听outdoor environments听with support from an Affinity-funded playground upgrade
  • Deepening听connections with the community

Jan says the support made a big difference. 鈥淛oining Affinity last year, I did feel nervous but quickly realised I still had a voice, and different support than under our previous owner. The training is amazing, and it鈥檚 clear Affinity wants us to feel confident that we can succeed.鈥

Educators at Bright Beginnings say the result belongs to everyone.听鈥淲e all feel proud that our hard work and commitment to children鈥檚 wellbeing and learning has been recognised,鈥澨齩ne team member shared.

Children and Families at the Heart

When the centre was notified of the upcoming assessment, Jan and her team used the short preparation window to focus on their educators鈥 wellbeing.

鈥淲e wanted our team to feel confident and calm when responding to the Authorised Officer鈥檚 questions, so we reassured them, prepared together, and made sure our evidence was ready,鈥 she explained.

The two-day assessment became a positive experience, with educators proud to share their work. 鈥淲e absolutely love what we do,鈥 says Jan. 鈥淎fter the draft report, we went back with some additional evidence and were over the moon to be awarded Exceeding.鈥

For families, this rating reflects what they already know - that their children are learning, playing, and growing in a safe and supportive environment.

A Shared Commitment Across Affinity

This result is not only a proud milestone for Bright Beginnings, but also a reflection of the strong culture of quality and continuous improvement across 黑料专区.

Currently,听92% of 黑料专区 centres that have been through Assessment and Rating are rated Meeting or Exceeding NQS. In 2025 alone,听13% of centres assessed have achieved an Exceeding rating,听placing them among the top-performing services in Australia.

Behind the statistics are thousands of dedicated educators who show up every day with passion, professionalism, and care. Bright Beginnings鈥 Exceeding rating is one example of how this commitment is making a real difference for children and families across Australia.

Achievements like this highlight the importance of ongoing reflection and improvement across the early education sector. At Affinity, centres are supported by dedicated quality and training teams who work alongside educators to ensure children and families receive the highest standards of care and education.

At Affinity, we鈥檙e proud of the difference our educators make every day.

Every June, something magical happens at Milestones Early Learning Helena Valley. The centre transforms into a sea of pink - streamers on the walls, cupcakes in the kitchen, and children twirling at a joyful Pink Disco. But behind the glitter and laughter is a story of immense strength, love, and unwavering community spirit.

This heartfelt initiative, known as Go Pink for Shelley, is now in its third year and has become a powerful tradition. It began in 2022, inspired by beloved educator Miss Shelley, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer that same year. Since then, the fundraiser has grown bigger and brighter, just like the woman who inspired it.

鈥淪helley is an absolute warrior,鈥 says Centre Manager Rachael Elliott. 鈥淪he鈥檚 still working nine days a fortnight and lights up every room she walks into. Her courage and positivity inspire all of us, every single day.鈥

Shelley has been part of the 黑料专区 family for eight years and continues to be a guiding light for the children she teaches, the families she supports, and the educators she mentors. Her diagnosis didn鈥檛 slow her down. Instead, it sparked something extraordinary - a centre-wide movement that raised record donations this year for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

This month, children have enjoyed pink themed craft, fun free dress days, and a 鈥楶ink Disco鈥.
This month, children have enjoyed pink themed craft, fun free dress days, and a 鈥楶ink Disco鈥.

Community Spirit in Action

Every day in Australia, more than 50 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. It鈥檚 a disease that touches countless lives, not just those who receive the diagnosis, but their families, friends, colleagues, and communities.

Funds raised through Go Pink for Shelley are donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, supporting life-changing research with the goal of achieving zero deaths from breast cancer.

By turning their centre pink, the community is doing more than raising money, they鈥檙e raising hope.

Shelley鈥檚 Impact Lives On

For Shelley, the love and support from her centre community mean everything.

鈥淪he maintains a positive outlook and reminds us that she is living with cancer, not the alternative,鈥 says Rachael. 鈥淭hat perspective alone has taught us all something about courage.鈥

As Go Pink Month wraps up for another year, the team at Helena Valley continues to stand by Shelley, not just this month, but every day.

And for the families who entrust their children to Shelley鈥檚 care, the message is clear: Milestones Helena Valley is more than just a childcare centre. It鈥檚 a place where love, strength, and community shine through, in every pink ribbon, every painted handprint, and every smile.

Milestones Early Learning Bairnsdale's two campuses have welcomed new Senior Centre Manager Jo-Anne Maguigan, who brings more than 36 years of experience in childcare, training, and management to her new role.听

Ask Jo-Anne what inspires her, and her answer is simple: "I have an absolute passion for quality Early Education and keeping children safe and healthy, and my passion has developed into a wonderful lifelong career."听听

Jo-Anne's career began due to an interest in development and gifted children, which led to a strong interest in brain development and a career that has already spanned more than 36 years in the sector in New Zealand, Victoria, and remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory.听

A registered Early Childhood Teacher, she is well-known in the Bairnsdale region, most recently for her teaching role at TAFE Gippsland, where she guided the early careers of locals as they completed Cert III, Diploma and work-based studies.听听

Now six weeks into her role as Senior Centre Manager at Milestones Early Learning Bairnsdale, Jo-Anne has formed close connections with her team, families and children and is ready to welcome new educators and teachers to the team, which she says will "strive to exceed in 2024 and beyond."听

"I believe every child deserves a high-quality early education, and that is why I was so excited to have the opportunity to come to Milestones Early Learning Bairnsdale and support the Dawson Street and Day Street campuses in 2024" Jo-Anne said.听

"As part of 黑料专区, Milestones Early Learning offers the Lifelong Learning Curriculum programs for children from birth to five years, incorporating funded Kindergarten programs for three- and four-year-old children".听

Milestones Bairnsdale - Jo-Anne Maguigan and children3

"Having liaised with 黑料专区 when I was teaching at TAFE, I was already familiar with their focus on quality, compliance, and career opportunities for both new and experienced early childhood teachers and educators".

Jo-Anne's goals for 2024 include some bold steps towards exceeding the National Quality Standards for Early Education and Childcare as set by the Australian Childcare Education and Quality Care Authority (ACECQA).

"Our two Milestones Early Learning Bairnsdale campuses are already Meeting the National Quality Standards, so our goal now will be to work towards exceeding standards, which will take a team effort. Our educators and the children we work for will absolutely make the effort worthwhile".

Milestones Early Learning Bairnsdale invites applications from new educators and Early Childhood Teachers to join the Dawson Street and Day Street teams.

Our amazing team at l held an early Australia鈥檚 Biggest Morning Tea on 19th May in honour of their beloved 鈥楩ighter Frankie鈥 to raise funds to support him as he fights Stage 4 Neuroblastoma.

Organised by Area Manager Sam Cummins, Centre Manager Keyten Gardner and supported by every educator, the Morning Tea offered a chance to be completely connected as the community rallies behind this beautiful boy.听听听

Local community businesses, families and Centre Cook Brooke Gardner, prepared and donated baked goods and their time, to set up and attended the event in their pyjamas from 7:30 am to raise funds to support Frankie with fun and interesting items to enjoy as he patiently endures his hospital treatment schedule.

Centre Manager Keyten Gardner explained:听听

鈥淔rankie is a sweet little boy that attends our service, who has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Frankie will spend most of his days for the next year in and out of hospital to complete many rounds of chemotherapy. Frankie and his older brother Alessio have been with our Milestones family for a few years now. We wanted to do something extra for Frankie and their family, so we have been promoting their GoFundMe page and also decided as a team to host a morning tea to raise funds directly from our local families."

鈥淵ou鈥檝e got this Frankie; you鈥檙e a strong, brave boy that will fight this. You鈥檝e got the whole Milestones family behind you,鈥 Keyten said.听听听

Frankies mother, Maree Desisto shared, "I am lost for words, your team have been amazing!! It鈥檚 so overwhelming all the support the community is giving towards our families during this hard time. Despite everything I鈥檓 so glad Frankie is still smiling and being his cheeky bossy self."

When asked about how she felt about the Morning Tea, Maree continued, "Overall, I felt overwhelmed as soon as I got there, I had to hold back the tears. Thank you, Milestones Early Learning Blair Athol for organising this event for our Frankie. It was an amazing turn out and I can鈥檛 believe the community spirit.

"We were all so touched by the generosity of the companies who donated, and all the food provided by the centre. Brooke did an amazing job! The event wouldn鈥檛 have been possible without your time and commitment. You鈥檝e always been so good to my family, and we are forever grateful."

Local families have rallied around with supportive comments on Facebook and direct to the centre also.听
